The Arkansas Black Apple is a lusciously dark apple. From a distance I mistook it for a plum. Look at that maroon, purply skin and the plump silhouette. Simply a dead ringer for a plum.
The appearance is, interestingly, not the only place with similarities between the two, by all count, disparate fruits. The notes of the Arkansas Black apple are primarily of unripened plum. Maybe even sugar plum, depending on the ripeness of the apple in question. This sweetness is very un-apple like. It is from a different flavor sphere of the fruit cosmos. Eating the Arkansas Black apple is like being transported into the plum world.
What pulls me back into the world of the apple is the flesh. For the Arkansas Black Apple, the flesh is dry and extremely firm. The grain is dense and tight. If only it were looser and more juicy, the plum comparison would be greater. There is a chalkiness to it as well that is not that appetizing.
Overall, however, the Arkansas Black Apple is a fascinating and tasty apple. I would not get it all the time, but I would definitely recommend others to try it to experience this plum-like apple.
