I am no stranger to Field Roast products, but I was a stranger to their vegan apple maple breakfast sausage. And to, I think, vegan breakfast sausage in general. I can’t think of another product I’ve tried like this. I remember real breakfast sausage fondly, so I was intrigued to try these out.
Admittedly, the first time I tried these vegan sausages was cut up in gravy with biscuits, so I didn’t get to try them on their own. As part of the gravy, they added a nice meaty texture and a little bit of savory flavor.
Cooked on their own…their texture is still fantastic. I forgot to take pictures of them cooked, but they turned into dark, meaty looking logs. They kind of reminded me of Bob Evan’s sausage.
The similarity also extended to the flavor. The apple maple didn’t really come through exactly, but it has this, for lack of a better term, overbearing quality that kind of settles in you. I ate it with ketchup and it was delicious. Though, it didn’t play well with me later.
I did enjoy eating them, but my body didn’t appreciate them afterwards, so I won’t get them, but I would recommend it for people without such issues to try. They have a good texture and taste!
