I felt a rush of excitement looking at the Calville Blanc. It looks bizarre and unique, not a normal style apple. The ridges are so different from other apples with their smooth, oblong shape.
In taste it is not normal either. It has a lemon-like sweetness in the front, with a similar styled acidity following it. The overall palette of the flavor is tangy. It stands out, but feels mellow, if that makes any sense. The flesh was squishy and grainy, not crisp at all.
I enjoyed it. It was different than other apples I had tried. The flavor profile is not at all the same as what we expect out of an apple nowadays, but it is still tasty if you try not to judge against apples of a different style. Comparing apples to other apples is not so simple.
