This vegan chorizo is the first El Zapatista product that I’ve tried. I picked up it to get some vegan meat for pseudo-fajitas we cooked Easter weekend. I’ve had fake chorizo before, once I think, but it was not at all like this.
The El Zapatista vegan chorizo comes in this really nice rectangular box (I loved the packaging). Inside the box is the chorizo ‘sausage’ in plastic casing. I found that to be really neat. To cook it, you had to pull it out of the casing and then shred it to pieces.
And as for how it cooked…
It never got that crispy (could have been how we cooked it), but we did get it to blacken in bits. The cooked El Zapatista chorizo had a sort of soft, chewy and meaty texture that reminded me of Thanksgiving stuffing. Like the bready aspect of it. I enjoyed that texture a lot, even though I wouldn’t associate it with chorizo that I remember.
The flavor, though—it got the flavor right. It had a good lingering kick to it. Sort of peppery goodness that was pretty hot. I had it with pseudo tacos/fajitas and combined with the tortilla, vegan cheese, and salsa, it wasn’t that spicy at all. The other components melded well with it and it offered its meaty texture to round out the experience.
So, overall, El Zapatista vegan chorizo was pretty good. It’s a very specialized product—I’d only get it for these sort of planned meals. But for that, I would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for some fancy vegan chorizo.
