These ‘Creamy Original’ Chao Tofu slices are a vegan cheese product from the Field Roast company. Field Roast produces vegan meat and cheese products. I’ve had their tomato ‘deli meat’ slices before, which I unfortunately didn’t formally review: I recall liking them, but they were a bit salty for my taste. Anyway, these Chao Tofu slices are cheese substitutes, not meat, and are definitely not salty.

I haven’t had too many different vegan cheeses, so I will be comparing this against the Daiya fake Cheddar cheese slices as, for me, it’s basically a question of which between these two brands do I prefer for general vegan cheese uses (plain eating and melting). The calorie count is the same between them (60 calories per slice).

The Field Roast Chao Tofu slices definitely don’t melt as well as the Daiya do. They feel thicker and yet lighter, though. Texturally, I think the Chao Tofu is closer to real cheese (from my recollection, anyway) than the Daiya. Flavor wise, Daiya is definitely stronger than these Chao ones.

At the end of the day, though, the differences between them aren’t that great. Daiya has better flavor/meltability, but Field Roast has better general texture. It is pretty close, and I did enjoy the Chao slices, but I prefer the Daiya cheese a little more than these Field Roast Chao Tofu slices, but not by that much. So I recommend these Field Roast Chao Tofu slices for those staying away from real cheese for whatever reason. These are suitable, hardy ‘cheese’ slices that bring a good texture to the table. I would happily have these or the Daiya slices any day.
