Moonlight White Tea, also known as White Moonlight, or Yue Guang Bae, or Yunnan white, is not, as you may think from the name, a truly white tea. It’s processed like a Pu’er tea, but isn’t a true Pu’er either. It’s complicated. It exists in a world where people get into arguments over technicalities and really, who cares about that nonsense? It’s a tea. You drink it and enjoy it!
I tremendously enjoyed it. The Moonlight White Tea is placed towards the top of my favorite tea list. I ended up stockpiling 10oz of it because I was so smitten with its flavor. And there’s the prestige aspect of it because of its uniqueness.
But mostly it was because of the flavor. It has this sweet, smooth flavor. Like a rich caramel or honey, sort of, but minus the overbearing sugar aspect. It’s nuanced. Not intense, just a smooth ride of flavor that grows on you the more you infuse with it. It’s well bodied. At points, I found it had that Pu’er earthy hit to it, but it bled back into the honey-like smoothness.
For those that like trying something special that doesn’t always announce itself immediately, I recommend trying the Moonlight White Tea. It’s a unique tea with a wonderful flavor and an interesting backstory.
