OWYN (only what you need) protein powder is vegan and packed with nutrients and protein (as one expects from such a product). Two scoops of it are 140 calories, which feels like a bargain for 20g of protein. Vukoo bars are twice that many calories for the same protein amount. But this is protein powder. You have to make it, well, work for you. It’s not out of the box like a protein bar is.
For me personally, getting it to work meant using one scoop of it with a large glass of water as a light breakfast or a dinner addition. I tried using two scoops with water and also blending it with fruit, but it was too heavy for me and a bit too gritty. I preferred it lighter and drinking multiple glasses than one heavier glass. Mixed together with water, it has a muddy slightly grayish brown hue.
The flavor came through regardless of preparation method: the OWYN chocolate powder is definitely sort of chocolatey, but not that intense at all. It has a grit and off flavor to it regardless, so it’s not as smooth as chocolate milk or something. It is good and sweet-ish enough.
This was an experiment for me since I had never really been into liquid meal replacements or protein powder that much. It was recommended to me by a friend and I thought: why not try it? I am glad I did as it expanded my horizons. I do find it very useful to have something I can use to ‘patch’ out a meal or have something light on the digestion that is packed with protein and nutrition. Actually, on a hot day, having a glass of chocolate mix with ice sounds quite refreshing and appealing. I’m probably going to try another brand and maybe OWYN’s vanilla flavor at some point to keep the experiment going. But I recommend OWYN’s chocolate flavor protein powder for sure if you’re looking for vegan chocolate protein powder.
