The Uniekaas Parrano Gouda may be a gouda, but it has some similarities with Swiss cheese. The first being it’s lighter gold color. It could really pass of for a Swiss cheese. Especially when, after slicing, little holes appear. Not
The familiarity to Swiss doesn’t end there.
On tasting, the Uniekaas Parrano Gouda doesn’t taste like a gouda as much as it does a very mild, tame, Swiss. I’m not that much of a Swiss fan, so I was surprised and confused by the notes I was detecting. But I kept trying it and eating it because, well, it was tasty! The flavors are reminiscent of a Swiss cheese, but it’s not an overpowering likeness. Yes, it has that off-nutty Swiss flavor, but it has also this sweeter salty edge to it that pairs really well with green grapes. Those two mellow foods worked together to create quite a scrumptious mix.
To be honest, this is not the type of cheese I would imagine liking. I’m definitely not-a-Swiss-fan. But I did enjoy this gouda and would recommend it. I don’t think I’d pick it up again because there are other cheeses I prefer, but the Uniekaas Parrano Gouda opened up a world where maybe I can more-than-tolerate-Swiss-flavors. And that’s a major for me. Maybe this cheese can change your opinions, too.
